IPv6: Next Generation Internet Protocol with Microtalk

The internet faces a major challenge. As new devices log on every day, the number of unique IPv4 addresses are running out. So, what can be done? IPv6 must be adopted and Microtalk is pleased to announce we have partnered with RIPE NCC to facilitate the global shift to IPv6 and continue to enhance the reliability of the communications we deliver our customers.

What is IPv6?

Every device that uses the internet — from the computer or smartphone you are reading this on, to any Bluetooth-enabled devices in your home — is identified by a unique numerical Internet Protocol (IP) address that enables its use by internet communication with other devices. The number of private IP addresses in your home has likely grown in the last decade, as they have done across the globe, and this poses a problem as public IP addresses are a limited resource and the original IP address scheme, called IPv4, is running out of addresses.

IPv6 is the next generation IP that is in the process of replacing the current version. Though it was designed in the 1990s, the worldwide exhaustion of available IPv4 address space has highlighted the importance and deployment of IPv6.

Microtalk and RIPE NCC

Here at Microtalk, we’re committed to staying ahead of the curve and providing future-proof communication services for you and your business, that’s why we’ve recently joined RIPE NCC to become a top-level IP range holder. RIPE NCC (Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre) manages the allocation and registration of IP numbers throughout Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia. RIPE NCC is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation that supports Internet infrastructure, including IPv6.

IPv6 and Your Business

What this really means is no access by third parties making it more secure and as always our customers only have to deal with a single provider for voice and data services.

Routing calls through an internet connection, like VoIP, will be used by all individuals and businesses by 2025(read A Quick Guide to the PSTN and ISDN Switch Off for more information about Big Switch Off 2025). Therefore, contact center solutions and Cloud PBX will need to be IPv6 ready. Choosing an IPv6-capable provider for your business communications is a vital way of securing optimum performance and reliability while transporting traffic (including voice) over the network, to secure cost-efficient and high-quality calling.

Microtalk is ready for the future of the internet by making the switch to IPv6. That means our site and services (from our app to desk phones) can improve the performance and increase the security of your communications. For more information, visit microtalk.co.uk.
